Belle And Sebastian Play Songs

On the 9th anniversary of 9/11, I was reminded of sitting in shell-shock all day, and then going to see Belle and Sebastian in the evening. Only ten percent of the ticketholders showed up, so it was like seeing them at a really strange warehouse party. They were so kind to us, like a healing Scottish balm on our wounds. They played Turn, Turn, Turn by the Byrds.  They’ve got a new record coming out in October. Everyone will say they hate it at first, but it’ll be great. That’s what always happens.

  1. When they started the set with “Turn, Turn, Turn”, I think I just about cried. They’d obviously barely practiced the song, as they made a more than a few mistakes, but they couldn’t have picked a better song.

I still get a lump in my throat when I listen to the recording of the show.

  2. Thanks D- it was lovely, wasn’t it? I remember feeling at the time that they had a better grasp on what had happened to us than we did, and that they were very kind to us for playing the show.

  3. That’s right, they were reading the lyrics off of printed sheets, like they’d only got the idea during soundcheck. Really amazing show. I recall spending half my afternoon just walking down to, ehh, whatever that venue was, to see if the show was still on. What still gives me chills is remembering how, when they sang the line, “It’s been a bloody stupid day,” the crowd cheered.
